Maternal Care Unit for Rural Indonesia

Maternal Care Unit for Rural Indonesia

Eastern IndonesiaSpecialized Care

On the remote islands of Eastern Indonesia, maternal healthcare is virtually non-existent. Women often give birth at home without any medical assistance, leading to one of the highest maternal mortality rates in Southeast Asia. When complications arise, the nearest hospital is hours away by boat, and many women don't survive the journey.

Siti, a local midwife with minimal training, shares her frustration: "I do what I can with the little knowledge I have, but without proper equipment or facilities, I can't help mothers with serious complications. Last year, we lost five women during childbirth—deaths that could have been prevented with basic medical care."

One Warm Wish is working to establish a dedicated maternal care unit on one of these remote islands. The total cost for this life-saving facility is $65,000, which includes:

  • Renovation of an existing building to create a clean, safe delivery space ($15,000)
  • Essential maternal care equipment including delivery beds, fetal monitors, and incubators ($25,000)
  • Ultrasound machine for prenatal monitoring ($8,000)
  • Emergency obstetric supplies and medications ($7,000)
  • Solar power system for reliable electricity ($5,000)
  • Training for local midwives and healthcare workers ($5,000)

This maternal care unit will serve approximately 15,000 women of reproductive age across several islands. It will provide prenatal care, safe delivery services, postnatal care, and emergency obstetric services for complicated cases.

"A proper maternal care unit would change everything for women here," says Dr. Anisa, who visits the islands quarterly. "Women wouldn't have to choose between risking their lives at home or making a dangerous journey to the mainland. They could receive the care they deserve right in their community."

Your donation will help establish this critical maternal care unit and save the lives of countless mothers and babies. Every contribution brings us closer to our goal of $65,000 to make this facility a reality.
